How are GLP-1 medication costs made up?
In the Netherlands, the price of GLP-1 treatment consists of three parts: the medication itself, the doctor's consultation and the supervision. At a regular pharmacy you pay only for the medication, but you still need a separate consultation and get no structured coaching. At a specialised clinic, everything is bundled into one monthly amount.
Medication costs themselves vary by medicine (semaglutide, tirzepatide or liraglutide), dose and manufacturer. Higher doses contain more active ingredient and are therefore more expensive. During the build-up phase you will usually pay less than during the maintenance phase.
On top of that there are additional costs for blood tests (roughly 50 to 100 euros each time), any extra consultations and sometimes injection supplies (usually included with the pen).
Costs per medicine in the Netherlands (2026)
The guide prices below apply to off-label use for weight loss (paid out of pocket, pharmacy prices). The range runs from the lowest to the highest dose: during the build-up phase you pay less than during the maintenance phase. Last checked on 18 August 2026.

| Wegovy | semaglutide (up to 2.4 mg) | Once a week | € 200 – € 350 per month | Basic health insurance with BMI ≥ 35 + a related condition and ≥ 2 years of a GLI (combined lifestyle intervention) programme; otherwise self-funded |
| Mounjaro | tirzepatide (2.5–15 mg) | Once a week | € 220 – € 400 per month | Only for type 2 diabetes, under conditions; not for weight loss |
| Saxenda | liraglutide | Once a day | € 180 – € 300 per month | Not covered for weight loss |
| Mysimba | naltrexone/bupropion (tablet) | Twice a day | € 100 – € 150 per month | Not covered |
Coverage by your health insurer
A strict reimbursement policy applies to GLP-1 medication. Ozempic is only covered with a formal diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Use purely for weight loss (off-label) is not covered, regardless of BMI.
Since 2024, Wegovy has been included in the Dutch Medicine Reimbursement System (GVS) for adults with a BMI of 35 or higher combined with a serious weight-related condition. The patient must first have demonstrably completed two years of a combined lifestyle intervention (GLI) without sufficient results.
Mounjaro and Saxenda are not covered for weight loss. For Mounjaro, coverage is possible for type 2 diabetes. Rybelsus (oral semaglutide) is covered for diabetes, not for obesity.
When does basic health insurance cover Wegovy?
To qualify for Wegovy coverage you must meet all of the following criteria: a BMI of 35 or higher, a serious comorbidity such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnoea or osteoarthritis, and a documented GLI programme of at least 24 months that has demonstrably produced insufficient results.
Your GP or specialist must write the prescription and formally document the underlying criteria. The pharmacy then submits it to your health insurer. If approved, you only pay the deductible (eigen risico), which is 385 euros in 2026.
Please note: not every health insurer assesses the criteria equally strictly. Some insurers ask for extra documentation or prior authorisation. At Go Leaner we support you in applying for coverage if you meet the criteria.
Costs at Go Leaner: one transparent programme
At Go Leaner you pay € 199 per month for the complete supervised programme: medical intake consultation with a BIG-registered doctor, blood tests, monthly doctor check-ins, lifestyle coaching and a digital dashboard. Medication costs are not included — you pay for those separately through the pharmacy and they depend on the medicine and dose. The minimum programme duration is 6 months to allow responsible medical monitoring.
The advantage of this set-up: for the medication you pay the actual pharmacy price (see the table above), and for the supervision one fixed, predictable amount. No bundles in which you cannot see what costs what.
There are two physical locations (Amstelveen and Aalsmeer) where the intake consultation takes place and where you can come for face-to-face consultations.
Hidden costs to watch out for
At online pharmacies without supervision, the monthly prices sometimes look lower, but extra consultations, blood tests and urgent contacts often fall outside the price. Always work out the total picture before switching.
Also watch out for currency and VAT: some foreign providers charge in British pounds or in euros excluding VAT, which still ends up expensive after conversion and duties.
The regular deductible (eigen risico, 385 euros in 2026) is also relevant if your GP prescribes Ozempic for diabetes. For off-label use it does not apply, because the health insurer does not cover the medication at all in that case.
