Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most asked questions about GLP-1 treatment at Go Leaner.

Eligibility & Intake

Who is eligible for GLP-1 treatment?
You may be eligible if you have a BMI of 30 or higher (obesity), or a BMI of 27+ with at least one weight-related comorbidity such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension or sleep apnea. Our physicians evaluate your complete medical profile during intake.
How does the intake process work?
You start with an eligibility check on our website (2 minutes). With a positive result, you schedule an appointment at our clinic in Amsterdam or Amstelveen. During the intake, we conduct blood testing to map your health. Our physician reviews the results and discusses the treatment plan with you in person. Upon approval, your medication is sent directly. The plan runs for a minimum of 6 months for proper medical monitoring.
Do I need to have tried a diet before?
We do not ask for proof of previous diet attempts. We consider obesity a medical condition that deserves medical treatment, regardless of diet history.
Can I participate if I live abroad?
Currently, Go Leaner is only available for residents of the Netherlands. We must ship medication to a Dutch address and our physicians are BIG-registered in the Netherlands.
How quickly do I get an assessment after intake?
Our physicians typically review your profile within 24 hours on business days. Upon approval, your medication is shipped directly and you receive it within 2-3 business days.

Medication

Which medications does Go Leaner prescribe?
We work with three approved GLP-1 medications: Ozempic (semaglutide), Wegovy (semaglutide, higher dose) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide). Your physician chooses the most suitable medication based on your profile.
How is the medication administered?
All GLP-1 medications are injected subcutaneously once weekly with a pre-filled pen. The needle is very small and most patients experience minimal discomfort. We offer instructional videos and personal guidance.
Can I choose which medication I want?
We listen to your preference, but the final choice is a medical decision by your physician. Your physician chooses based on your health history, medication use and treatment goals.
How long does treatment last?
The average treatment duration is 12-18 months. After reaching your target weight, we gradually taper medication under medical supervision. Some patients remain on a lower maintenance dose.
Does the medication need to be refrigerated?
Yes, GLP-1 medication must be stored in the refrigerator between 2-8 degrees Celsius. A pen in use may be kept at room temperature (up to 30 degrees) for a maximum of 28 days. We ship your medication in temperature-controlled packaging.
What do I do if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose within 5 days and then resume your normal schedule. Has it been more than 5 days? Skip the dose and continue the following week as planned. Never take a double dose.
Can I administer the injections myself?
Yes. Your physician explains first use and we offer instructional videos. The pens are pre-filled and easy to use. Most patients feel comfortable with the weekly injection after the first time.
How do I store my medication?
Store the pen in the refrigerator (2-8 degrees Celsius). After opening, the pen can be kept at room temperature (maximum 30 degrees) for up to 6 weeks. Do not freeze and protect from direct light.
Is the medication available through my GP?
GLP-1 medication requires a prescription. Your GP can also prescribe it, but at Go Leaner you receive specialized guidance, personal coaching and a complete digital platform to monitor your progress.
Can I combine Wegovy or Ozempic with other medications?
Always discuss your current medication with your Go Leaner physician. Combination with other GLP-1 agonists is not permitted. Our physician evaluates all possible interactions during intake.

Side Effects & Safety

What are the most common side effects?
Nausea is the most common side effect (20-44%), followed by diarrhea, constipation and abdominal pain. These side effects are usually mild, temporary and decrease after the adjustment period of 2-4 weeks.
Is GLP-1 medication safe?
GLP-1 medication is approved by both the EMA (European) and FDA (American). The safety profile has been extensively studied in large clinical trials with tens of thousands of participants. Like any medication, there are risks, which we openly discuss.
What if I experience serious side effects?
For serious side effects, you can immediately contact your physician through our patient dashboard or physician line. Your physician can adjust dosage, temporarily pause or switch to another medication.
Can I combine GLP-1 medication with other medications?
That depends on your current medication. Our physician evaluates all interactions during intake. GLP-1 medication can in some cases affect the absorption of oral medications. We tailor your treatment accordingly.
Can I use GLP-1 medication during pregnancy?
No. GLP-1 medication is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Stop treatment at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy. Always discuss family planning with your physician.

Costs & Coverage

What does treatment cost?
We offer a single Basic Plan at €199 per month, minimum 6 months, including medical intake, blood test, monthly physician check-in, lifestyle coaching (2x in month 1, then 1x per month), digital dashboard and chat support. Optional add-ons (personal training, extra coaching, supplement package and extra blood test) are available à la carte; pricing on request. Medication costs are not included.
Is it covered by my health insurer?
GLP-1 medication for weight loss is not covered as standard by basic insurance. Some supplementary insurances offer partial coverage. We advise you to contact your insurer.
Are there hidden costs?
No. The monthly fee covers everything: medication, physician visits, coaching (depending on plan), digital dashboard and support. There are no setup fees or hidden costs.

Reimbursement & Payment

Is GLP-1 medication covered by health insurance?
GLP-1 medication for weight loss is not covered as standard by basic health insurance. For type 2 diabetes, semaglutide (Ozempic) may be covered in some cases when other treatments are insufficient. Consult your insurer for your specific situation.
Why is the treatment not covered?
Obesity medication is not yet included in the basic health insurance package in the Netherlands. The expectation is that this will change in coming years as more evidence becomes available on long-term effects. Some supplementary insurances already offer partial coverage.
Are payment plans available?
At Go Leaner you pay monthly. There are no long-term contracts and you can cancel per month. You only pay for the months in which you are treated.

Practical

How do I receive my medication?
Your medication is delivered monthly to your home in temperature-controlled packaging. You don't need to visit a pharmacy. Delivery is included in the fee.
Can I track my progress?
Yes, through your personal patient dashboard you can track weight, measurements, side effects and lifestyle data. With wearable integration, activity and sleep are automatically recorded.
How do I reach my physician?
Through the messaging system in your dashboard, you can reach your physician on business days. For medical emergencies (severe side effects, suspected pancreatitis) contact the GP out-of-hours service or call 112 directly — this applies to every patient regardless of plan.
